Employee Counseling

Individual employees and their family members can discuss their personal problems with a professional counselor in a relaxed, confidential setting. Employee Assistance of the Pacific staff and providers can help with a wide variety of difficulties including stress, job-related problems, marital and family issues, depression, anxiety, and alcohol and drug addiction.

Our EAP counselors statewide are all seasoned professionals qualified to practice individually. All counselors hold at least a master's degree in a clinical field such as social work, marriage and family therapy or counseling psychology. They have flexible schedules and will work with employees to schedule an appointment that is convenient.

Following assessment, the best treatment option is selected. Most issues can be addressed effectively through the EAP counseling benefit; however, in some instances, the EAP counselor may conclude that the most appropriate treatment can be provided through a private provider or community program. In such cases, the employee will be referred to one of our carefully screened referral sources.

Our counselors can help with a variety of issues, including the following:

  • marital/relationship issues
  • interpersonal difficulties with friends or co-workers
  • depression or anxiety
  • concerns regarding children and adolescents
  • caregiving for elders and others
  • stress management
  • substance abuse (alcohol and other drugs)
  • grief and loss
  • difficulties in achieving personal or professional goals
  • financial and legal concerns

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How do I make an appointment?
A: Appointments can be made by calling EAP Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at 597-8222 (Neighbor Islands toll free at 1-877-597-8222). Staff members have flexible schedules and will try to arrange an appointment that is convenient for you.

Q: What can I expect at my first appointment?
We will ask that you come in 15 minutes early to fill out paperwork, or complete the intake form prior to coming in.  The counselor will meet with you privately to discuss your concerns and an initial assessment will be completed. You and your counselor will discuss options and determine the best course of action, which could include continuing sessions at EAP or perhaps a referral to a community resource.

Q: What if I need more visits than the benefit allows?
Most issues can be addressed effectively through the EAP counseling benefit. In some instances, the EAP counselor may conclude that the most appropriate treatment can be provided through a private provider or community program. In such cases, the employee will be referred to one of our carefully screened referral sources. In many cases the employee's medical insurance will cover the cost of these services.

Q: Is phone counseling available?
A: Yes. Phone counseling is an option. Employees may call and consult with a counselor regarding personal needs or concerns for which they are seeking information, but do not need face-to-face counseling. Telephone counseling is also available when there is a crisis, or if transportation or other factors do not allow an employee to come in to the office for an appointment. Employees are screened first for whether this is an appropriate option for their circumstances.

Q: Is my involvement with EAP confidential?
A: Yes. Your privacy is guaranteed. Brief, confidential records are kept to assist in our counseling and referral services. Records are stored at our offices and are not made part of your personnel, human resources, or company medical files. EAP will not disclose information about your participation without your specific written consent. The only exceptions to confidentiality include child/elder abuse, serious threat of harm to self/other, or a bona fide subpoena from a court of law.

Q: What is the definition of eligible family member?
A: Under most benefit plans, any dependent and/or family member living in your household is eligible to share your benefit. This includes significant others and domestic partners.

Q: What are the staff's qualifications?
A: Our staff members all have master's or doctoral degrees in a counseling related field and are sensitive and skilled in working with Hawaii's multicultural population. They have different clinical interests and come from a variety of backgrounds to meet a wide range of client needs. Our affiliate providers have a wide variety of educational backgrounds, licensure and/or certification, and specialties to meet your needs.

Q: What if I don't like my counselor?
If you are not happy with your counselor you may phone our office and we will refer you to another clinician.
